Research has shown that the majority of neighborhood
speeders actually live in the neighborhood. Oftentimes a simple reminder can have
a significant impact on reducing these offending drivers. Here are a couple of
ideas used by some local governments looking to increase neighborhood traffic
safety.
Speed Watch
Some cities have implemented a speed
watch program that trains residents to use radar guns and provides free equipment
for a week. Information gathered by the neighborhood watch group is sent to the
state's department of motor vehicles and a letter is issued to offending drivers
reminding them to slow down.
Banner, Bumper Stickers & Signs
A
Banner Program supplies neighborhoods with banners reminding drivers to slow down.
The neighborhood group also receives bumper stickers that remind others to slow
down. One city charges interested neighborhoods $100 to help defray the costs.
